I've decided this is the worst season of football ever. For me, personally, it's been torture watching the 49ers. Coming into the season, they were the favorites to win the NFC West. Now they are 0-5 and we're all wondering if they will actually win a game this season. Sad, sad times. But the Niners being bad does not necessarily make the NFL season a bad one entirely. The Niners have been bad for a while. However, this year it seems indicative of the league as a whole...loads of talent, no good teams. The NFL does not appear to have a single elite team. At all.
The New Orleans Saints lost to the Arizona Cardinals (who are being QB'd by Max Hall and have no discernable defense) this weekend. The Sunday Night game last weekend between the Giants and the Bears was the worst execution of football I've ever seen. It was 3-0 at halftime, and the Bears were undefeated at the time! The Green Bay Packers are 3-2 and appear unlikely to score many points, besides having a top 3 QB, a top 3 WR corps, and a top 3 TE. The 4-1 Chicago Bears won a game yesterday with less than 30 passing yards...that's how bad the Carolina Panthers are. Atlanta almost lost to the Niners. Preseason favorites Dallas and Minnesota are a combined 2-5. I mean, the NFC has no true elite team...and barely any good teams.
In the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens appear to be the creme of the crop...and they're in the same division. The Steelers won a game recently in which they did not score an offensive TD, had just over 30 yards passing, and were playing with their 4th string QB. The Ravens lost to a Bengals team that does not appear to be any good. The Jets lost to the Ravens and only put up 9 points in that game, the Patriots have the worst defense I've ever seen on a winning team. Indianapolis cannot win on the road. Jacksonville is tied for the division lead with it's entire division. Mediocrity at it's finest! San Diego is 2-3 a season after it got a first round bye!
This is the first year since 1970 in which no team made it to 4-0. And its not just the records of the teams that is abysmal. The players themselves have all been bad.
Through 5 weeks, 16 QBs have thrown at least an interception a game (5 or more total interceptions through 5 weeks). That is abysmal. Alex Smith leads the way. But Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, Tony Romo, and Matt Schaub all fall into the category of at least a pick a game. There have already been 9 kick off returns for TDs this season. Last season there were 18, through the entire season. Special teams is a sign of league talent depth. Clearly there is none this year. So far, the median for points per game is a full 2 points lower than last season. Through 5 weeks this season, there has been an average of 3 more turnovers per week than last season. This is just not good football!
There is not a single game this season, so far, that stands out to me as an awesome game. Usually there are always a few by now. But the games this season have either been blowouts, or two teams in a turnover and bad defense fest down to the wire. It's just brutal. Good thing hockey season is here to distract me, this football season has made me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty nail.
