Yup, with the conclusion of the 2009-2010 NFL Season, all records revert back to 0-0. The dreaming can recommence, as all teams are in first place and have a shot at winning the Super Bowl. Except the Lions.
The Super Bowl this year was pretty cool, although it wasn't nearly as exciting down the stretch as the last two were. Two years ago, the Giants beat the undefeated Patriots on a very late TD catch after The Play, the one where Eli avoided 4 sacks on 4th and like 12, chucked it down the field, and Tyree caught it against his helmet. Yeah, that The Play. Insane. Then last year the Cardinals scored a TD with just over 2 minutes left to take the lead and looked to be heading towards their first ever Super Bowl victory...only to let the Steelers march down the field in their 2 minute offense and score a TD to win. Both of those were nail biters til the end.
The Saints-Colts came in with lots of hype and the promise of lots of scoring. 31-17 isn't particularly high scoring. It's pretty average, actually. And the game had a little back and forth. The pick 6 was exciting, and also pretty much ended the game...with, what, 4 minutes left? Still, it was awesome to see the Saints win. New Orleans deserved a champion, and this team deserved to be rewarded for all their work in bringing this city back, at least emotionally.
But, back to the more important point. The Niners are back in first. And they may actually be the favorites to win the NFC West this coming season. Kurt Warner retired, and with him goes the AZ offense. Their new Leinart-run offense will probably not be able to keep up with the number of points their defense will allow. Seattle and St. Louis are rebuilding. So that leaves the Niners, who had a pretty good season, lost a bunch of close games, and appear to be a few pieces away from 10-6 or 11-5! With two first round picks and a little cap space, they could definately make the moves necessary to shore up the O-line, get some help for the secondary, and get us into the playoffs. Guess we'll have to wait and see how the offseason unfolds.
This brings us to the end of football season, which means we are less than a mere two weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training. As an A's fan, I'm not particularly optimistic about this coming season...but at least we have some good prospects that might help us out next season. Unless we have half a billion injuries again...
So, with no football, and no baseball yet, its hockey season! And the Sharks are right in the thick of things again. Of course, we're about to take a 2 week break from NHL hockey so we can watch Olympic hockey. So it doesn't really matter how well the Sharks are playing now...it'll matter how well they're playing in March and April. And for the Sharks, sadly, none of this matters. This team will be judged, fairly or not, on how they perform in the postseason. If they do not at least get to the Western Conference Finals, they will be deemed a horrific failure. And heads will probably roll. Sigh. Let's hope the Sharks win and I can spend a full week after we do so partying! Woot!
Anyways, I guess that's enough for now. I'll try to post something of substance later on this week.
