BCS: Bullshit Championship System

Here we are again, at the end of the college football season. And, once again, there is controversy surrounding the BCS and who will challenge for the BCS Championship.

The BCS was created in an effort to determine who the two best teams in the nation were so that football's college championship could be decided on the field, rather than by pollsters. Unfortunately, the controversy has just shifted from who deserve to be named national champion to who deserves to play in the national championship game.

This year is no exception.

Undefeated Ohio State is a no brainer. They have been dominant all year long. They beat two different #2 teams, and really never looked back. Who will face them, though, is the controversy. There is one loss Michigan, who's only loss is to #1 Ohio State...but they finished second in their conference and faced a very easy schedule. Then there is 1 loss Florida, who's only loss is to #10 ranked Auburn, and finished the season 12-1, winning the SEC Championship and only lost once against the toughest schedule in the entire nation.

If I had to choose between these two teams, I'd hope Florida gets the nod because they actually won their conference, and the SEC is insane.

However, if the system was really fair, Ohio State would be paired up with the only other undefeated team in the nation...Boise State.

That's right. Boise State deserve a shot at the National Title. They got through their season undefeated, beating a much improved conference schedule that included 8 win San Jose State, 8 win Nevada, and nationally ranked 10 win Hawaii. They also beat nationally ranked Oregon State! If that doesn't prove Championship consideration, I don't know what is.

The BCS system is a crock. Just like every other sport in existance, there should be a playoff system to determine the football championship. Take the top 8 teams in the BCS (or the big 6 conference champions and 2 at large bids...for teams like Boise State), and have them play out a three round playoff over a few weeks. The end of the tournament...The Championship Game, can be a part of bowl week, played a few days after New Years Day. And then we can say that the championship was determined on the field, where is should be...not on computers and by voters who don't even watch most of the games.

Unfortunately, this will never change. There is too much money in the bowl games for schools and conferences to give up. So, for now, we will have to hope that there are two undefeated teams to meet in the championship game, no more and no less.
