Thanksgiving has always been one of the most underrated holidays of the year. Never has this been more evident than over the last few years, when Christmas advertising season seems to be starting earlier and earlier (reports from across the nation had Chrsitmas displays up in stores as early as Labor Day!). Thanksgiving, recently, has become the overlooked speedbump on the path to Christmas.
I think this is bullshit.
Thanksgiving is one of the most glorious holidays of the year, second in my book only to the Fourth of July! Why? I'm glad you asked that, because I intend to lay out why this holiday is amazing and should not be overlooked.
First, Thanksgiving is an entire weekend. Because it is on a Thursday, and it is such a big travel weekend, we always get Thursday and Friday of that week off from work. Some people even get that Wednesday off to travel. So, this could end up being, for some, a 5 day weekend! That's awesome! We never get that much time off without having to use our own vacation time. Having all those days off in a row, especially after not having a single day off since the beginning of September, is really really relaxing.
Next, Thanksgiving is the one holiday centered around food. The Thanksgiving Feast is a glorious feast. You eat all you want without the fear of people looking at you funny for eating so much. To hell with diets! To hell with watching what you eat. I'll watch it straight into my mouth! There's so much to choose from, turkey, stuffing, crecent rolls, cranberry sauce, corn, peas, more turkey, gravy, yams, potatos, dark meat, light meat, and tryptophan! MmmmmmmMMMM! Thems some good eats right there! Load up and deal with the consequences later!
Thanksgiving is also awesome because there are no presents involved. No shopping. No obligations to get something for someone because they are getting you something. People are just happy to see one another and spend time with one another. It's a holiday all about family and friends and spending time together...which is awesome. It's not a holiday about gifts and glitter; glitz and glam...bah! All that stuff is good, but give me good food and family over that any day!
Finally, and probably most importantly, Thanksgiving is all about FOOTBALL! There's the Lions game (and they're going for history this year...trying to become the first team to go 0-16. I wish them luck). Then there's the Cowboys game, and they're playing Seattle. Awesome. That should be...ugh. And there's the NFL Netowrk game now on thanksgiving that no one will be able to watch since no one has NFL Network. And there's always the family game of backyard football. Football is everywhere on Thanksgiving! Amazing.
Food, family, and football...the three F-words that make for an amazing holiday. So, please, I ask you to not overlook this glorious holiday. Christmas will be here before you know it anyways, so take some time out and enjoy this glorious holiday before you get all caught up in the yule tide cheer...or get too drunk on egg nog!
