MMR: The Football Gods Have Awakened

So, holy crap, please tell me you watched the Super Bowl! Please! If you didn't, you missed out. Let me quickly recap for you: 10 minute FG drive, immediate NE TD, defense, defense, defense, defense, HOLY CRAP DID YOU SEE THAT 4TH QUARTER! And that was that. The New York Giants pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history, and prevented the pompous New England Patriots from completing a perfect season (and prevented the jackhole Tom Brady from joining Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana in the "I've won 4 Super Bowls" club). Saaaaaaweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Really, no one outside of New York gave the Giants much of a chance, even though most everyone outside of Boston was cheering for them. The Patriots even brought their cheerleaders, wearing the skimpiest of outfits, in a magnificent display of cheerleader professionalism. The odds seemed stacked in their favor, and 19-0 seemed inevitable.

But the football gods woke up and put an end to those shenanigans.

Back in week 1, the Patriots were caught cheeting. They were taping the Jets' defensive signals in, as commissioner Goodell put it, "a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid long-standing rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field." The Patriots then seemed to be upset that anyone dare look down on them because of this, and chose to run up the score on clearly inferior opponents...going for it on 4th down with 10 mins left in the game and up by 35...continuing to throw deep while up late in games. By the time they made it to the playoffs, people seemed to had forgotten all about these transgressions. And then, before the Super Bowl, a report surfaced that the Patriots had taped the Rams' secret walk throughs the day before the Super Bowl, and thus knew what game plan they were going to use. The Rams had been practicing plays they had yet to use in the regular season, and yet the Patriots seemed to be prepared for them...interesting. This is on top of Belichick being an arrogant assclown who believes he is above the rules and refuses to shake coachs' hands sometimes after games, and Brady being a pompous ass who thinks he's better than everyone else.

All seemed forgotten...but then the football gods woke up.

In attempting to be the first team to go 19-0, and only the second team to complete a perfect Super Bowl winning season, the high flying Patriots were grounded by a tenacious Giants defense. The line, the best O-line in the NFL, could not contain the Giants' speed rushers and blitz schemes. Eli woke up in the 4th quarter and led the Giants on 2 TD drives...the second of which was 84 yards and gave them the lead with just over 30 seconds left in the game. Clutch.

Tom Brady led the Patriots on an 80 yard TD drive just before Manning's last heroics, which gave the Patriots the lead with 2:50 left in the game. All the announcers thought it was over, that Brady had done it again. The Patriots players on the field, always the epitome of class, were inviting the Giants to their victory party that night. And then the football gods intervened.

17-14 was the score, 18-1 was the record of the Pats, and Super Bowl Champions was the new name of the G-men. All was right with the world.

I must say, this was one of the best Super Bowls I had ever seen. I was sooooooooo happy that the Giants won. I think the only way I could have been more excited would have been if it was the Niners winning the Super Bowl. Seriously, I hate the Patriots that much. And now, in back to back season, a Manning has won the Super Bowl. Next season we will probably see at least one of the Manning brothers in every single commercial every Sunday. The NFL may even mandate it. Seriously.

And on that note, good bye to another NFL season...and remember, only 9 days until Pitchers and Catchers report for Spring Training! Go A's!!!
