When the playoffs started, everyone looked at the White Sox and figured they were done. They had to play the defending World Champions and had just barely avoided one of the biggest division choke jobs ever. The pundits were looking forward to another Yankees/Red Sox ALCS, and the Sox were done.
Then fate stepped in.
After last year's hoopla over the Red Sox breaking the curse of the Bambino, no one seemed to remember that Chicago had suffered a fate worse than Boston...they haven't won a World Series since 1917. The Curse of the Black Sox is rarely talked about, but the White Sox haven't won a series since the 1919 Sox threw the World Series. But in an era where curses seem to be falling, the White Sox appear to be the next in line to break their championship drought. With one more win, the White Sox will break a drought that was worse than Boston's fabled curse and is bested only by their cross-town rivals. Even though the Red Sox winning the World Series was a big deal, I contend that this victory will be an even bigger deal. The White Sox fans never whined about their lack of winning, like Red Sox and Cubs fans have. They just supported their team...and they deserve this championship.
Which brings me to my next argument.
I have a prediction: The Chicago Cubs will win the World Series in 2006. Why? Well, its fairly simple. We are in an era of curses falling, and they seem to be falling in reverse order (Red Sox 1918, White Sox 1917...). The Cubs' Curse of the Billy Goat has lasted since 1908. I don't care who you are, thats a LONG time. And teh Cubs have a good team. If they can stay healthy, they have as good a shot as anyone to win the World Series. With a little fate on their side, I don't see how anyone will stop them.
Finally, what does an imminant White Sox Championship mean to me as an A's fan?
It tells me that the Oakland A's had a shot at being the best team in baseball this year. The A's won the season series over the White Sox this season 7-2. That's not even close. So, the White Sox win the World Series, and the A's own the White Sox...obviously the A's are the superior team in the league.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Anyways, the White Sox winning the World Series is a big friggin deal. Bigger than Houston making their first World Series. Bigger than the Red Sox winning the World Series last year. So, all you White Sox fans out there, enjoy this! The Sox have been dominant this postseason, only losing one game, after everyone wrote them off. They deserve this and should celebrate like there's no tomorrow once the fat lady sings!
